Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is before the Senate judiciary committee today, testifying about the sexual assault she suffered, she says, at the hands of the current nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Thursday’s hearing began with testimony from Ford who recounted in painful detail the sexual assault.
During her testimony, the female sex crimes prosecutor hired by the Republican members of the committee to question Dr. Ford, Rachel Mitchell, asked her how she had gotten to Washington D.C. for the hearing. She asked if Dr. Ford traveled by airplane after it was reported in the media that Dr. Ford has a fear of lying.
Dr. Ford responded, referring to Congressional investigators, “I was hoping that they would come to me but then realized that was an unrealistic request.” She went on, “That was certainly what I was hoping was to avoid having to get on an airplane, but I eventually was able to get up the gumption with the help of some friends and get on the plane.”
Mitchell then asked if it is true that Ford travels by plane “fairly frequently” for work and vacations. Ford replied, “correct, unfortunately.” Ford acknowledged flights she took to Hawaii, Costa Rica and French Polynesia, pointing out “Easier for me to travel that direction when it’s a vacation.”
President Trump’s son and namesake took the opportunity to mock Ford while she testified before the Senate committee and the American people about a deeply painful, and traumatic experience. Don Jr. took to Twitter to attack Ford.
He tweeted writing, “I’m no psychology professor but it does seem weird to me that someone could have a selective fear of flying. Can’t do it to testify but for vacation, well it’s not a problem at all.”
